The Dallas Mavericks have named Jason Kidd as their new head coach.
That's what the basketball franchise announced.
Dirk Nowitzki's former teammate won the only NBA title in the history of the Mavericks together with the Würzburger in 2011.
Kidd was assistant coach at the Los Angeles Lakers for the past two years and won the title in 2020 with the team led by LeBron James.
The 48-year-old takes over the team around basketball national player Maxi Kleber and superstar Luka Doncic as the successor to Rick Carlisle.
The master coach had surprisingly left Dallas in the middle of the month and will work for the Indiana Pacers in the future.
Also on Monday, the Mavericks announced the successor to Donnie Nelson as general manager of the franchise.
Long-time Nike manager Nico Harrison takes on this role.
Nowitzki returned to the Dallas Mavericks two years after retiring as a »Special Adviser« to advise team owner Mark Cuban on important personnel decisions.
"Of course I said yes, whenever I can help my mavs, I'll be there," Nowitzki said in a statement.
For many years Nowitzki belonged to the elite of the world's best basketball league, as the first European he was named the most valuable player in the league in 2007 (2007).
In addition, the Würzburg 14-time all star and most valuable player in the finals (2011).
He has scored 31,560 points in 21 NBA years, sixth in the all-time leaderboard, and in the last home game of his career he became the oldest professional to score 30 points or more in an NBA game.
