Euro 2021: the German government calls for the reduction of the gauges in the stadiums

2021-06-30T09:33:31.715Z

In an interview with a German daily on Tuesday, Interior and Sports Minister Horst Seehofer calls for a reduction in the number of

"Irresponsible" is how Horst Seehofer describes UEFA's decision to host 45,000 people at Wembley for the round of 16 Germany v England. "I think it is irresponsible that tens of thousands of people gather in a small area in countries which are considered to be at risk areas of the highly contagious Delta variant." The Delta variant is in fact circulating in the United Kingdom. Moreover, the British government had decided ten days ago to postpone its deconfinement because of the rapid spread of the variant. In addition, England is on Germany's list of countries at high risk of contagion. Germans must therefore undergo a quarantine when traveling, even if they have been vaccinated.

Horst Seehofer wants the 20% gauge applied at the Allianz Arena in Munich to be "a criterion that could also apply to other matches".

As a reminder, for the semi-finals and the final which must also be held at Wembley, the gauge of 50% spectators must further increase.

We would then move to a capacity of 45,000 supporters to 60,000.

These UEFA decisions had already caused controversy.

Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi had notably called for moving the Wembley final to another country, again because of the increasing cases of Covid-19.

The long-awaited meeting between the two nations is to be held this Tuesday at 6 p.m.

Even if Gareth Southgate ensures that his players do not think of taking revenge on Euro 96, the media and social networks can not help but see this match as such.

Wembley awaits 🙏
