Euro 2021: nearly 80% of French people want Didier Deschamps to remain coach

Here is a survey which will restore balm to the heart of Didier Deschamps, after the elimination of his team against Switzerland in the round of 16 of the Euro.

A survey carried out over the last two days by Odoxa, with a sample of 1,005 people representative of the French population (including 476 football fans), shows that 78% of them want the coach of the Blues to remain in his post.

According to our information, their wish will be validated: the 98 world champion will be well at the end of his contract which expires at the end of the World Cup in Qatar, at the end of December 2022. His speech, this Tuesday , in the lounge of the hotel in Bucharest where the France team took place for its (last) match, showed that it is looking towards the future and the next deadlines, that is to say the playoffs of the world at the end of the summer, then the final phase of the League of Nations in the fall.

In this same survey, the players are judged much more responsible for the premature elimination (77%) in the eyes of the French, than their coach (21%).

If the latter, in office for nine years, had left the Blues, 64% of respondents and 72% of football fans would like the appointment of Zinédine Zidane to succeed him.

The unexpected return of Griezmann, Pogba, Lloris and others has left traces, both internally and among supporters, who hoped for a double after the 2018 World Cup. Before the competition, 56% of them (72% of football fans ) saw their favorites lift a new continental trophy after 1984 and 2000. As a result, still in this Odoxa survey, 65% of French people (85% of football fans) are disappointed by the course of the Blues.

A declining popularity rating

Obviously, the popularity of the Blues is weakened: 52% of French people (71% of football fans) have a good opinion of the France team, which represents 11 and 21 points of decline in a month.

However, this is much more than in October 2013, when the popularity rating of players did not exceed 14%.

Before Euro 2016, they were 29% to have a good image of the Blues.

However, two-thirds of French people (66%) and 58% of football fans are not worried about the future of the France team.

They remain optimistic and consider that the fall of Bucharest is only a mishap.

They bet on the promises of young players in the making, without burning their idols which made them dream in Russia, three years ago already.
