The allegations have been known for a long time, now the National Football League (NFL) has reacted.

The Washington Football Team has been fined $ 10 million due to the poor work culture and multiple incidents of sexual harassment and abuse.

The NFL announced on Thursday as a result of an investigation in the past few months.

The money is to be used to support institutions that campaign against bullying, among other things.

In addition, the team of owner Dan Snyder is obliged to prove every six months to what extent new rules and processes can prevent further incidents.

Several former Washington Redskins employees made public in the summer of 2020 that they had been the victim of sexual harassment during their time with the NFL team.

In an article published by the Washington Post, 15 women reported on their experiences at the organization between 2006 and 2019, in which they mainly had to learn verbal indecentities and clear offers.

In addition, some were encouraged to dress more revealingly.

Again and again debates about the nickname

The Washington team had hit the headlines in the past few months not only because of the allegations from among the ranks of the cheerleaders and other employees. Even after years of debate, the club split from the racist surname "Redskins" (redskins) and has since played under the name Washington Football Team. The Redskins logo has also disappeared, showing a Native American in profile. A new name is not yet known.

There have been repeated efforts in the past to get rid of the nickname.

In May 2014, 50 Senators wrote to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell to enforce a name change.

At that time, three major TV stations announced that they would avoid the full team name during the broadcasts for the new season and only speak of "Washington".

Former US President Barack Obama also once joined the discussions.
