The maxi trimaran Edmond de Rothschild struck an unidentified floating object at high speed in the Bay of Biscay. The central shell and appendages are affected.

It was to be a major training outing.

Because allowing Franck Cammas and Charles Caudrelier to continue their preparation for the Transat Jacques Vabre (November 7).

Missed.

Leaving Lorient on Friday, the crew of the Maxi Edmond de Rothschild returned there this Monday morning, blues to the soul and carbon.

Seriously damaged during an impact with an unidentified floating object at high speed in the Bay of Biscay, their 32-meter flying monster will have to return to work.

And quickly, to repair the big damage on the central hull and the appendages.

Everything happens very quickly and it is always difficult to identify things but the impact was dry and it was a hard matter ”

Charles Caudrelier

We were at 30 knots, which is high when an impact occurs but what remains our" cruising speed "with the Maxi Edmond de Rothschild. We felt a shock first on the rudder then a fairly brutal second on the central hull rudder. Everything happens very quickly and it is always complicated to identify things but the impact was dry and it was a hard material

”, detailed Charles Caudrelier, on his return to port.

Already forced to give up on January 22, at the entrance to the Indian Ocean during their record attempt in the Jules Verne Trophy following a problem on the rudder of the starboard float, the men of the Gitana Team were forced to manage a small waterway to successfully bring their Ultim Injured back to port.

In the shock, the rudder lock of the central hull, located at the very rear of the Maxi Edmond de Rothschild, was severed.

A damage which resulted in the loss of the appendix as well as structural damage around it

, ”the team said in a statement.

A project on the program

It is never pleasant this type of mishap but unfortunately we know that shocks are part of the equation when we are sailing. We have it in mind every time we go out. There was damage to the boat and in particular to the rear of the central hull at the location of the rudder. We will have to take the Maxi Edmond de Rothschild out of the water in the next few days. We had planned our qualification for the Jacques Vabre and a lot of sailing… but that's how it is! We are going to adapt to the new schedule imposed on us by this damage. It is part of the life of offshore racing projects and the positive point is that we should be able to be back to take the start of the Rolex Fastnet Race at the beginning of August

”, concluded Charles Caudrelier.
