Angelique Kerber has reached the quarter-finals at Wimbledon and is among the top eight players in a Grand Slam tournament for the first time since her triumph at the lawn classic three years ago.
The 33-year-old won 6: 4, 6: 4 against the 17-year-old American Coco Gauff in London.
Against the last strong Gauff, the game was characterized by the wind and some nervousness at the beginning.
The first five games all ended with service losses - but after the break to 3: 2, the Kiel woman no longer gave up the advantage and used the second set ball after 32 minutes.
The three-time Grand Slam winner often cleverly countered her 16-year-old opponent, the aggressive Gauff had to fight hard for every point.
Kerber, once number one in the world, used the first match ball after 1:16 hours.
Kerber had already shown in Bad Homburg that she is in good shape, she won the tournament.
In the quarter-finals she will now meet Karolina Muchova from the Czech Republic, who made it to the semi-finals at this year's Australian Open.
Jabeur beats Świątek
The Tunisian Ons Jabeur also made it into the quarter-finals, becoming the first Arab tennis player at Wimbledon.
The 26-year-old eliminated last year's French Open winner Iga Świątek (Poland) 5: 7, 6: 1, 6: 1.
So far, Jabeur had only reached the round of eight at the Australian Open 2020.
In the third round, Jabeur had already defeated the former Wimbledon winner Garbiñe Muguruza from Spain.
The number 24 in the world had proven her good turf shape right in the run-up to the Grand Slam highlight when she became the first Arab woman to win a title on the WTA tour in Birmingham.
In the quarter-finals, Jabeur faces second-placed Aryna Sabalenka.
