The route between Carcassonne and Quillan will leave room for a few breakaways before the high mountains of the following days.

The 14th stage of the Tour de France, Saturday between Carcassonne and Quillan, is offered to backpackers on a course of 183.7 kilometers traced in the Pyrenean foothills of the Aude and Ariège.

"One can imagine a long fight before the good breakaway emerges", predicts the race director Thierry Gouvenou, noting that the first 60 kilometers are not very selective in the valleys of the Razès reminiscent of the Tuscan hills.

The race then climbs, by a climb classified in the second category, to the emblematic site of Catharism, at the foot of the “pog” of Montségur, the scene of a terrible pyre in 1244. Three other climbs still have to be made, the last (col de Saint-Louis) located at the entrance of the last 20 kilometers.

At the foot of this pass, too steep for sprinters (4.7 km at 7.4%), the Tour passes through the spectacular Snail-shaped viaduct.

The last kilometers, downhill or false flat, lead to the finish in Quillan.

An unprecedented stopover city, the city of the upper Aude valley (3,300 inhabitants) was once the capital of hat making and also French rugby champion in 1929.

Departure from Carcassonne at 12:25 p.m. (launched at 12:40 p.m.), arrival at Quillan around 4:59 p.m. (time calculated at the average of 42 km / h).
