Italy's European title celebrations: three dead and several seriously injured in the peninsula

The night was long this Sunday in Italy. Euphoria gripped all of Italy after Squadra Azzurra won the Euro 2020 final at Wembley. But the night of madness was darkened by several accidents and violent episodes. The celebration of the European title was even in mourning. So in Venice, a lifeless body was found in the early hours of Monday in a canal. The body, not yet identified, is that of a man, apparently middle-aged, who was wearing a bathing suit. He showed no signs of violence, and an autopsy will be ordered to understand the causes of death: the emergency services which intervened probably believe that it is linked to the celebrations of the victory of the national team.

In Caltagirone, in the province of Catania (Sicily), a 19-year-old boy died and four people were injured overnight in a road accident involving a car, two scooters and a motorcycle.

According to a first reconstruction by the police, everyone was heading towards the city center to celebrate the victory.

The impact occurred not far from the Gravina hospital, where the four injured were transported: their lives are no longer in danger.

In Alessandrino, a district of Rome, a young man died and four other people were injured in the head-on collision between two cars which occurred at dawn.

The victim was traveling with three other boys, all injured, and it seems they were heading home after the victorious evening.

Wounded from Rome to Genoa via Milan

In Milan, 15 people had to be rescued during celebrations in Duomo Square, including three young people who are seriously injured. A 21-year-old lost a few fingers of one hand to a firecracker. Another 20-year-old has been hospitalized with an injury to his abdomen: it seems he was pierced by the hook of a barrier. A 21-year-old was hospitalized after suffering an injury to his abdomen caused by the explosion of a large firecracker.

In Genoa

14 people ended up in hospital last night and a man has been charged with sexual assault after fiddling with an 18-year-old girl who was partying. In Empoli, in the province of Florence, a 26-year-old was stabbed around 2 a.m. during celebrations in Piazza della Vittoria: rushed to hospital these days are not in danger of death. Police investigations are underway to understand the motive for the attack.
