The French have bet 435 million euros online on the entire Euro 2021 competition according to Isabelle Falque-Pierrotin, president of the National Gaming Authority (ANJ).
This competition set a new betting record "in the history of online sports betting," said the boss of the ANJ on BFM Business on Monday.
During the 2018 FIFA World Cup, online sports betting “was in the order of 330 million euros”.
The French bet 20 million euros in the final between Italy and England, but the betting record was reached in the France-Switzerland match, with 27 million euros, said Falque-Pierrotin.
“For four years, there has been a majority of online betting compared to physical betting,” she notes.
“The French are interested in sports betting, in football sports betting, and this is a trend that has accelerated in recent years.

5% new players during lockdown
The number of sports bettors in the first quarter of 2021 increased by 29% compared to the same period last year, according to the latest figures from the ANJ, for a total of 2.5 million active accounts.
“We have a kind of enthusiasm for sports betting that attracts new players,” confirms Isabelle Falque-Pierrotin.
Last year, we did a study during lockdown that showed there were 5% new players.
This is also what worries us, because these new players do not necessarily have the culture of protecting their activity.
It is a market which is maintained by a very important media presence of operators.
