Damascus-SANA

Amid the mixed opinions of the basketball fans and clubs, the General Assembly of the Basketball Association decided to hold the Republic Cup for men under 27 years old.

The General Assembly held its meeting yesterday in the presence of 51 delegates out of 79 who make up the full number of members of the Assembly. The proposal was supported by 28 delegates, rejected by 20 delegates, and three delegates abstained from voting.

The President of the Basketball Association, Alaa Gokha Ji, confirmed that the result of the vote approved the proposal legally by the majority of those present, and the call for a general assembly to approve the proposal is a legal act, which is the last measure that can be taken to confirm or cancel the proposal.

Gokha Ji said: The Football Association has the right, based on the authorization of the General Assembly, to implement what it deems appropriate to develop the game. Despite that, we held a general assembly during the season to approve the amendment by voting, explaining that the Republic Cup championship, in which teams with players under 27 years old will participate, will start from next Sunday in the first round competitions.

The proposal of the Basketball Association sparked a great controversy among the Syrian clubs between agreeing with the decision and rejecting it, and the Federation of the Game had previously approved it after a previous vote among the 12 clubs, then called for the convening of the General Assembly for its official approval.
