Marie-Sophie Zeidler blows to catch up with the double fours and takes silver in her last U23 race

Schwaig / Racice - At the award ceremony, the quadruple was suddenly only three.

Luise Bachmann was not on her feet yet.

She had exhausted herself completely on the last few meters in the final.

This final sprint brought Germany silver at the U23 World Cup in Racice, Czech Republic.

Also on board: Marie-Sophie Zeidler, the 22-year-old Schwaiger.

Vice world champion, great thing, right?

“I want to be completely honest,” she replies.

“Gold was the goal.” And then she adds: “As an athlete, you should always strive for the best.” But yes, yes, World Cup silver is great too.

"After all, we didn't start the race as the top favorites."

As well as?

Due to the corona-related break in competition, the competition simply could not be assessed due to a lack of comparisons.

In the course of the week it quickly became clear that the Swiss women are very strong.

However, there shouldn't be a direct duel for the time being.

Marie-Sophie Zeidler, who starts for the Donau-Ruder-Club Ingolstadt, Luise Bachmann (Rowing Club Ingelheim), Tabea Kuhnert (SC Magdeburg) and hitter Sarah Wibberenz (Rowing Club Havel Brandenburg) dominated her prelim.

Already after 1000 meters the lead was so big that the German double scull could spare himself.

"The semifinals weren't quite that easy, but we definitely won again," said Zeidler.

The competition from Switzerland had much closer races.

“But we have already seen from the travel times: Switzerland is almost the same time,” says Zeidler.

The final day: The rowing woman from Schwaig sat in every boat from one to eight.

She also made no secret of it when - like two years ago in the eighth - the chemistry among the athletes is not right.

“But here in the quadruple it really worked.

We had a lot of fun together at the training camp.

That worked well. ”However, a regatta week like this is always critical.

“The tension is there.

You don't train much anymore, you have little to do.

You can get a camp fever there. "

After the small disappointment about the missed gold, the German double scull was proud of the silver medal.

And how do you get along with a Marie-Sophie Zeidler these days? Surprising answer: “That depends on the boat class. When I start in the One, I'm always very excited. But the more I sit in the boat, the more relaxed I am, ”explains the budding policewoman. On the final day of the U23 World Cup, that was probably quite good, because: "The other three almost went nuts with all the excitement," says the 22-year-old.

At the start everything was fine.

“We got off very well,” says Zeidler.

“It was a neck and neck race for the first 1000 meters.

Once we were ahead, then the Swiss women again. ”Halfway through the race, the German quartet wanted to ignite the turbo.

“We wanted to drive away from the competition with a sprint.” Unfortunately, the Swiss apparently had the same idea.

And, even more stupidly, it worked.

The Swiss boat was gone.

And suddenly the Italian quartet was in second place.

Gold definitely gone, and my arms were already on fire.

“We almost certainly had a medal,” says Zeidler, “but the right color is also important”.

So Zeidler and Co. started the race to catch up on the last 500 meters and moved up to second place.

She was "completely exhausted" at the finish.

"At first I was a little disappointed about missing gold." In the meantime, however, the joy over the silver medal at her last U23 competition, which was also the last highlight of the season, outweighs her.

She keeps her fingers crossed for her brother Oliver at the Olympics.

The World Cup in Shanghai, for which it would have been considered, was canceled due to Corona.

Marie-Sophie Zeidler doesn't find that so tragic, because another project will begin in September: the last year of training with the state police.

But rowing continues.

“I take a few days off, but then I put myself back in the one.” Training to land at the top next time.
