Tennis professional Angelique Kerber has canceled her participation in the Olympic tennis tournament in Tokyo.

The reason for this is a thigh injury that the Janeiro, who won the Olympic runner-up at the 2016 Rio Games, suffered on their way to the Wimbledon semi-finals, their management told the German Press Agency.

"The decision was infinitely difficult for me," wrote the number 22 in the world on social networks.

She has to admit that her "body urgently needs rest after the exertions of the last few weeks," the 33-year-old explained her move.

The three-time Grand Slam tournament winner had left her weaker months behind in the grass season.

At the Olympic Games, Kerber wanted to compete in singles and mixed competitions with Alexander Zverev from July 24th to August 1st.

She was the flag bearer for the opening ceremony.

Kerber joins the long list of prominent cancellations for the Olympic Games in tennis.

For various reasons, the top stars Serena Williams, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer are missing in Japan.

Dominic Thiem and Simona Halep will also not compete.

The world number one Novak Djokovic had left it open after his victory at Wimbledon whether he would be there.

The Tokyo Olympics will open on July 23rd and end on August 8th.
