The Tokyo Olympics are not spared by the increase in Covid-19 cases a few days before the start of the trials.

The pandemic is still taking its toll and is not leaving the Games alone.

Coronavirus cases are increasing among residents and new entrants to Japanese territory.

This Thursday, the organizers announced several contaminations, including that of an athlete and five other people working for the event who had just arrived from abroad and tested positive for the virus.

Brazil, Russia and Kenya in the crosshairs

A few hours before, eight staff members of a Japanese hotel in Hamamatsu hosting the Brazilian Olympic judo team who tested positive in Munakata (southwestern Japan).

Japanese authorities have assured that none of those infected have come into contact with them.

Yoshinobu Sawada, a sports manager for Hamamatsu, clarified that only hotel employees who tested negative interact with the team.

Even on the Russian side, a member of the staff of the rugby sevens team was hospitalized following a positive test for the virus.

The 16 athletes and members of the management are confined in the hotel while waiting.

In the same discipline, eight members who make up the staff of the Kenyan women's team were declared contact cases after the discovery of a case of coronavirus in the plane taken by the delegation.

Yesterday, a member of the United States men's basketball team was placed on Covid-19 protocol.

No details on its possible contamination.

Contamination on the rise across the country

One week before the start, this Thursday, 1,308 new cases of Covid-19 were identified in Tokyo.

This figure exceeds 1,000 cases for a second consecutive day.

Thomas Bach, the president of the International Olympic Committee, admitted to having doubts about the holding of the Games a few days ago.

Earlier this week, a state of emergency was declared again in the country with its share of restrictions.

The IOC and the organizers will have to deliver “safe” Games within a week, a real health challenge.
