Tonight (Sunday), Omri Caspi will officially announce his retirement from basketball at a special press conference (20:30, live broadcast on Walla! Sports).
A Maccabi Tel Aviv player in the last two years, who made history in 2009 and became the first Israeli to be selected in the first round of the NBA Draft and play in the best league in the world, decided after two years full of injuries to hang up his shoes and not continue in the yellow uniform for a third season.
Only in the middle of the week were Maccabi Tel Aviv sure that Caspi's direction was different.
The player kept in touch with the team members, and talked about the plans and the place he will have on the roster if he decides to continue.
"Few knew he was closer to retirement than to continuing," said one of the team members last night, "the feeling was that he would continue. The direction in the team was that if he did not want to retire, find him a place on the staff."

But Caspi's knee has given its signals several times in the last two years, and his fear that another injury will come and he will be forced to start another rehabilitation process has prevailed.
"Sometimes you want to retire on your own terms, and not that your body has overwhelmed you," Maccabi Tel Aviv said. "Omri retires with a double, it sure contributed to his decision."
Maccabi Tel Aviv planned to give Caspi a cut contract for next season if he decided not to retire.
The player would get the money he deserves from the Yellows' option to leave the contract and sign a new contract, but these things did not stand the test in the end.

Now the Yellows are in a strange situation - the team already thought they had completed the roster if Caspi did not retire, and will probably have to add another Israeli alongside Yiftach Ziv, John Dibertolomeo, Jake Cohen and Oz Blazer, with nothing to do with Yuval Levin who will most likely rise from the youth team .
The player market has only shrunk in recent days, and Maccabi has a limited number of options for strengthening the staff.
Roman Sorkin is the most senior option, as he recalled last summer he was in advanced negotiations with the team to sign him.
Other names on the market are Rafi Manko, Sean Dawson and Nimrod Levy.
Each of the four aspires to play in Europe, but it is estimated that the Yellows' appeal to them may change the picture.
