A 31-year-old international footballer was arrested last Friday at his home by Greater Manchester police.
According to information from the Daily Mail, confirmed by other English media, this player playing at the Everton club is suspected of sexual abuse of a minor.
He was released on bail after his interrogation.
The Premier League club announced Monday evening that it had suspended its player, "pending the outcome of the investigation."
"The club will continue to support the authorities in their investigations and will not make any other statement for the moment," said the club from the North of England, without revealing the name of the player.
The Daily Mail specifies that investigators searched his house earlier in the month.
According to a source questioned by journalists, "the locker room (of Everton) was shocked by the news" while the suspect said he was "overwhelmed".
The player in question is said to be married.
Everton, who appointed ex-Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez as their new manager last month, are gearing up for the new season after finishing 10th in the previous campaign. For the resumption, they will face Southampton on August 14 at Goodison Park.
