Tokyo - What, Timo Boll is still playing?

In fact, even at the age of 40, the German table tennis face * does not think about the end of his career.

Boll was number one in the world several times, eight times he was European champion, and twice he won the World Cup.

But one coronation is missing from his extraordinary career: the individual Olympic medal.

Olympia 2021 in Tokyo * could be Boll's last chance to fulfill this dream after all.

With the German team he won silver in Beijing in 2008, bronze in London in 2012 and in Rio de Janeiro in 2016.

In the late autumn of his career, Boll is still one of the best table tennis players in the world and is currently tenth in the world rankings.

Olympia 2021: Timo Boll and Dimitrij Ovtcharov on the hunt for medals

The DTTB has a second hot iron in the fire at the Olympics: Dimitrij Ovtcharov is eighth in the world rankings and already has an individual medal at the Olympics in his pocket.

In 2012 he took a sensational bronze medal in London.

It is a mammoth task for both of the top German athletes to assert themselves in the Chinese dominance every time.

Olympia 2021: Timo Boll was about to end his career

In 2020, however, his career would have come to an end: a back injury turned out to be so persistent that Boll almost gave up.

“I'm very attached to the sport.

But for the first time I really thought: Maybe it doesn't make any sense. ”With the help of syringes, he made his comeback - and right away his eighth European title and the triple with Borussia Düsseldorf.

"It will probably be my last games," announced Boll.

He no longer has to prove to anyone that he is a great sportsman, but his ambition remains unbroken.

“I really want to see enough for this medal.

If I'm fit, I can go far, ”he is convinced.

The fact that the Chinese have not competed in international competitions for almost a year and a half because of Corona could be an advantage for him.

Who apart from Boll and Ovtcharov has a medal chance in Tokyo?
