The Swedish women's soccer team defeated the United States by three goals without a response, at the start of its campaign in the women's soccer championship at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics today.
Fifth seed Sweden put pressure from the start on the four-times Olympic champion, ending an unbeaten streak since 2019 in front of empty stands at the 48,000-capacity Tokyo stadium.
America failed to avenge Sweden, who knocked out the four-times world champion in the quarter-finals at the 2016 Olympics on penalties in the worst result in its Olympic history, having reached the final in every edition since women's football entered the Games in 1996.
America will play New Zealand in the next match, while Sweden will meet Australia next Saturday.
