The Canadian Tennis Federation announced the withdrawal of Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic, the world number one, from the Toronto Preparatory Championship for the US Open, scheduled for next month.
"We had hoped that Djokovic would participate, but we understand his decision, given the great effort he made to equal the record for the number of major championship wins and his participation in the Tokyo Games," the Toronto Championship organizers, scheduled for August 9-15, said in a press briefing.
After Djokovic withdrew from the hard-court tournament, which is one of the preparatory tournaments for the US Open scheduled between August 30 and September 12, Russian Daniil Medvedev will be the first seed in the Toronto Championship.
