Record striker Robert Lewandowski from FC Bayern Munich has once again been voted Germany's Footballer of the Year. The 32-year-old Pole prevailed in the election organized by the »Kicker« by a huge margin ahead of his team mate Thomas Müller and Borussia Dortmund's young star Erling Haaland. Austrian Nicole Billa from TSG 1899 Hoffenheim is footballer of the year. Thomas Tuchel from Champions League winner Chelsea won the coaching category.
"I know how big this honor is," said Lewandowski, who broke Gerd Müller's age-old record with 41 goals this season.
"I am very proud of this number of hits and is certainly a spectacular achievement in view of my injury." Lewandowski had already won the journalists' choice last year as the triple winner at the time.
His lead over Müller grew again compared to 2020 - Lewandowski got 356 votes, Müller 41 and Haaland 38.
Tuchel takes over from Flick
Billa prevailed with 61 votes ahead of the German national team players Lea Schüller (FC Bayern Munich / 57 votes) and Almuth Schult (VfL Wolfsburg / 49).
"Crazy!
I didn't expect that at all, ”said the 25-year-old, who reached third place in the Bundesliga with TSG last season.
Tuchel, 47, replaced the new national coach Hansi Flick as coach of the year.
The Chelsea coach, who triumphed against Manchester City in the premier class final with the Blues, got 129 votes - eleven more than Flick, who left record champions FC Bayern for the DFB in the summer.
Edin Terzić, who coached BVB last season, finished third with 75 votes.
"I accept the award very gratefully as a great honor for the entire team because I see myself as a team player," said Tuchel.
