Japanese surfer qualifies for the final on the home beach

At the Olympic premiere of the surfers, the Japanese Hiroto Ohhara reached the finals on his home beach in Chiba.
The 24-year-old was born in Chiba, east of Tokyo, and grew up there too. Now he only had to admit defeat to Brazilian Italo Ferreira in the first of five heats.
The first two surfers of each heat qualify for the third round.

The skateboarders celebrated their Olympic debut in Tokyo.
In the street competition, US skater Jagger Eaton won the first of four heats of the day with 35.07 points, while Frenchman Vincent Milou came second with 34.36 points.
The athletes showed spectacular tricks - and also falls.
Eaton even lost one of the headphones he was wearing in the competition in a fall.
It was tough without the support of the audience, so he wanted to get himself in the mood with rap music over the headphones, said Eaton.
The final after the four preliminary runs is scheduled for 5.25 a.m.
