Matthieu Androdias: "Our frustration, we turned it into fuel"

2021-07-28T05:17:26.602Z

Matthieu Androdias and Hugo Boucheron, crowned Olympic rowing champions in Tokyo, believe that their "rugged course" enabled them to "surpass themselves" to achieve consecration.

The race was very hooked, how did you experience it?

Matthieu Androdias:

There was pressure throughout, including a nice neck-and-neck with the Dutch.

I made a "false shovel" in the first 500 meters, that put us back in the pack.

We had to get back on track so as not to lose the rhythm.

In the end, it was a huge adrenaline rush.

I see them out of the corner of my eye (the Dutch).

It all happened physically.

If we had rowed beautifully, we would have been behind, we had to give up what we like to do to engage strongly (...) We sent all that was left and, on the line, I did not realize at all instantly (we won).

Hugo Boucheron:

I was in hunting dog mode. I made a mistake in the last 500 meters, and there I said to myself: "it is not possible to be so stupid". During the race, in fact, I was a bit elsewhere. (...) I had one part of my brain in panic, the other was aggressive and calm, it was a game of ping-pong in my head. And when we win, I don't really know what's going on.

We felt you were very moved on the podium. What was going on in your head at that time?

Mr. Androdias:

I fell in love realizing how far I have come. I think of all the slaps we took. But it was a path we had to go through. We wouldn't have gone this far without all these slaps. (...) Our journey has been hilly both individually and together. There were many misunderstandings, questioning. At times, we almost hung up the shovels. With each defeat, we have deconstructed to rebuild ourselves stronger. We surrounded ourselves to break the ceiling, we knew we could do it. Our frustration has been turned into fuel.

H. Boucheron:

On the podium, there were a lot of emotions.

I thought of my father (...) and then of our journey.

We had two years of hollow, during which we trained very hard, very hard.

(...) Winning a race may seem easy on the screen, but for us it has been a long road of anguish and difficulties.

We are as different as our hair.

Hugo boucheron

You have been rowing together for six years, it is your experience that has made the difference.

Tell us how you built all this ...

Mr. Androdias:

We have worked a lot on humans, it's a medal between friends that we went to look for with the bond that we built.

However, me at the base, what interested me, it was to be all alone.

When I was introduced to Hugo, at first I didn't care.

I was forced a bit (...) It wasn't all happiness.

We had to build a complementarity where I saw only differences.

H. Boucheron:

We are as different as our hair (laughs).

In our reactions, in our way of reasoning.

But in the end, we always end up coming together and having the same ideas.

Mr. Androdias:

I thought that in order to be successful we had to be the same. (...) But one day, I realized that I had to make room for it, and from there, everything started. Today, our difference is our strength.
