In the Olympic pool, Germany won a medal on Wednesday morning for the first time since 2008.
Right at the front was Katie Ledecky in the 1500 meter freestyle - who had recently started over the 200 meter distance.
The German rowers lost the silver medal believed to be safe in an unfortunate appearance in the quadruple in the last meters.
That was important
The pool swimmers had to wait a long time for an Olympic medal since Britta Steffen's Olympic victory in 2008, to be precise. Now it was that time again,
Sarah Köhler swam to bronze in the 1500 meters freestyle
. Köhler undercut the German record by six seconds. However, this did not come close to
Olympic champion Katie Ledecky
, who safely took gold, although she had already started the 200 meter freestyle early on Wednesday morning and finished fifth.
Like Ledecky
, the Hungarian Kristof Milak also won swimming gold
over the 200 meter butterfly. The 20-year-old couldn't really be happy because Milak has dominated the scene for years and holds
the world record, which he would have loved to expand.
He didn't succeed in Tokyo, so there was only a smile at the award ceremony. There, on Wednesday morning,
the Japanese Yui Ohashi
won gold in the 200 meter medley
and
the Australian Ariarne Titmus in the 200 meter freestyle
. Titmus' coach, whose jubilation went viral after his protégé's 400-meter victory, was comparatively cautious this time.
The
double quad of the German rowers
did not even make
it to the award ceremony
. For the first time in the history of the 1988 boat class, the women's quadruple missed a medal. The fact that it was only fifth this time was due to a
technical error around 250 meters from the finish
. Until then, the boat was safely on the silver course. It is called "a crab" when the rudder blade tilts in the water. "It's just a bitter defeat," said Carlotta Nwajide.
China took gold
.
In
basketball
, however, the Germans had every reason to be happy.
The team of national coach Henrik Rödl
won against the Nigerian "dream team" 99:92 (50:50)
and can continue to hope for the quarter-finals after the opening defeat against Italy.
The German team was already behind with eleven points in the third quarter.
The best German thrower was Johannes Voigtmann
with 19 points.
In the final group game, the team will face Australia on Saturday.
That will be important
The
goal for the team of coach Stefan Kuntz is to make it to the
quarter-finals of the Olympic football tournament
.
In the final group game against Ivory Coast (kick-off at 10 o'clock) the German selection needs
but a victory to get ahead.
From 10.30 a.m.,
dressage rider Isabelle Werth
can
write German Olympic history.
With a victory in the individual, she would win her eighth gold medal - as many as the previous sole record holder Birgit Fischer.
In
7-a-side rugby
, an Olympic champion is being sought for the second time since 2016.
Can Fiji defend its title?
Fiji meets New Zealand in the final, starting at 11 a.m.
A victory, a defeat - so the previous balance of the
German handball players
in Tokyo.
Against the table top France, the second success should succeed.
Kick-off at Yoyogi National Stadium is at 2:30 p.m.
3x3 basketball is making
its Olympic debut
in Tokyo
.
The first gold medals in this sport will be awarded today at Aomi Urban Sports Park, at 2:55 p.m. for women and at 3:25 p.m. for men.
And then Germany's best tennis player
Alexander Zverev has
a busy day ahead of him: In the singles he fights against the Georgian Nikolos Bassilaschwili for the quarter-finals, in the doubles it goes with
Jan-Lennard Struff
already about reaching the semifinals.
Opponents are the Americans Austin Krajicek / Tennys Sandgren.
