Varane to carry on French tradition at Manchester United

2021-07-28T05:34:39.644Z

From Eric Cantona to Patrice Evra via Louis Saha and Anthony Martial, many French people have worn the Manchester United jersey.

Eric Cantona (1992-1997)

The King, the legend, the “player of the century” according to Reds fans.

Arrived in 1992, he won the championship in the first year, a first for the Mancunian club for a quarter of a century.

He will glean three more.

Due to his legendary “kung fu” kick against a Crystal Palace supporter in January 1995, number 7 was suspended until October.

After five seasons at United, the midfielder with the raised collar retired in 1997.

Mikaël Sylvestre (1999-2008)

Trophies in spades.

Undisputed left-back for seven seasons, Sylvestre is part of the great MU which marches on England and Europe: with in particular five titles of champions of England and a C1, it gains all the titles with the Reds.

Before giving way to another Frenchman, Patrice Evra, with an equally impressive track record.

Fabien Barthez (2000-2004)

Transferred from AS Monaco for 80 million francs (about 16 million euros), a record at the time for a goalkeeper, the world and European champion remains four seasons in England.

Indisputable holder and double champion (2001-2003), it loses its splendor before being loaned and then sold to Marseille.

Laurent Blanc (2001-2003)

After achieving the World Cup / European Cup double with the Blues, Laurent Blanc is playing with United in the Champions League for the first time in his career, at the age of 36.

The native of Alès, first indisputable holder, hangs up at the end of his second season, where he wins a league title.

Louis Saha (2004-2008)

Promises spoiled by wounds.

When he joined the Reds in 2004, Louis Saha was already a confirmed Premier League striker.

If he started his Mancunian adventure well, his body betrays him.

Returned to the highest level in his third season, he suffered from physical problems then relegated to the bench before leaving MU with all the same a C1 and two championship titles.

Patrice Evra (2005-2014)

A Champions League, five English championships, three League Cups, a Club World Cup, Community Shields ... He will have missed "only" the FA Cup in the XXL record of Patrice Evra, the most capped Frenchman with the Reds, whose charismatic left-back was captain, with 379 appearances.

Anthony Martial (2015- present)

Promises but too irregular services: arrived on tiptoe on the last day of the summer transfer window in 2015, Martial quickly shows the full extent of his talent.

Barely under Mourinho and too inconstant, he regains his splendor with Solsjkaer, before relapsing.

If he played Euro 2016 with the Blues, his performance is insufficient to convince Didier Deschamps to take him to the 2018 World Cup and Euro 2020.

Paul Pogba (2016-present)

Most expensive player in the world when MU recruited him in 2016 from Juve for 105 million euros excluding bonus, Pogba, trained at the club, arrives with the sign of the prodigal son. A marriage of passion that quickly takes hold, the Frenchman notably winning the Europa League in his first season. Like Martial, the departure of the “Mou” and the arrival of the Norwegian freed him. La Pioche regains its splendor, having its best accounting season. Often announced on departure, he should continue to fuel transfer rumors in the weeks to come.
