The hardships of the past few months have also left their mark on DFB trainer Stefan Kuntz.
"My body gives clear signals that it is at the limit," said the 58-year-old after the German footballers missed the Olympic quarter-finals.
He wants to go away for a few weeks and turn off the cell phone.
Only then does he think about his future career, he said.
Most recently there was speculation about a farewell to Kuntz. The team also apparently does not consider the coach's whereabouts to be safe. “If it was Stefan Kuntz's last game, it's bitter. He formed us into a unit, ”said defender Jordan Torunarigha after the Olympics. On Wednesday, Kuntz and his team were eliminated with a 1-1 draw against Ivory Coast after the preliminary round at the Olympics. From a German point of view, the tournament was under a bad omen, Kuntz only got 18 of his 22 squad places. The team wants to start their journey home to Germany on Thursday.
Kuntz's contract with the DFB runs until 2023. Immediately after the end, Kuntz himself said: “If I could say something about my future immediately after the game, I would not have been fully involved in the game.
I'll worry about that in peace. "
For Kuntz it was an exhausting summer with two big tournaments.
In June he had won the European Championship title with the U21s, and about a month later he went to the Olympic Games in Japan.
In between he worked as a TV expert for ARD at the EM.
Already in 2017 he had become European champion with the U21 of the DFB.
Before that, Kuntz had not worked as a trainer for years, but as a functionary.
Kuntz had already announced after the European Championship victory with the U21 that he wanted to "let the whole thing work" after the Olympics.
Russian media recently reported that he was one of the candidates for the job of the Russian national coach.
