JO: Cécilia Berder: "We know that these medals are rare"

2021-07-31T15:25:33.139Z

Silver medalist in teams on Saturday in Chiba at the Tokyo Games, the Frenchwoman paid tribute to the sabers of previous generations. "They so deserved what we have around our necks!"

How do you feel after this silver medal?

Cécilia Berder:

We know that these medals are rare and we should savor them for all those who do not have any, who go home from the Olympic village without, so we have to savor (...) Afterwards, we try to 'bring a little smiles, a little levity because we waited so long to be on this Olympic track.

Frankly, a year and a half ago, we were afraid that the Games would be definitively canceled, we promised ourselves that whatever happens, we had the right and the obligation to smile.

Is it a recognition of the work accomplished in saber for several years?

We received messages from the "old" (Anne-Lise Touya, Léonore Perrus, Carole Vergne and Solenne Mary, editor's note) and I, who had the chance to be with them in Beijing in 2008, when they were number 1 in the world. .. They so deserved what we have around our necks! The women's saber in France was built with these great champions before us. So yes, it is only the four of us who have a medal but when we go back to France, we will heat the phone in mode: "girls, it's for you!".

What role did your coach Jean-Philippe Daurelle play?

He is someone who is able to invent things for you, morning, noon and night. He is always in the rhythm, the details. Every day, it will upset you, ask you to continue to progress. It's dizzying, vertiginous but what are we progressing.
