American Fred Kerley and Canadian Andre de Grasse completed the podium with respective times of 9'84 and 9'89.
De Grasse had already won the bronze medal at the last Olympic Games in Rio.
Another outsider who was expected after his resounding semi-final marked by an Asian record, the Chinese Su Bingtian did not confirm the test in the final.
A few minutes earlier, the British rider Zharnel Hugues was disqualified for a false clean start.
Italy enters the top 10 in the medal ranking
Thanks to this first place, the Italian delegation integrates the top 10 in the medal table with a ninth place.
A few minutes later, it was a compatriot of Lamont Marcell Jacobs who brought back a new gold medal for Italy: in the high jump, Gianmarco Tamberi reached 2.37 m.
He thus joined the Qatari Mutaz Barshim with whom he agreed to share the first step of the podium.
