JO: Céline Boutier: "Representing France is rare for a golfer"

2021-08-03T17:48:48.635Z

The Frenchwoman will play in Tokyo the first Games of her career. 59th in the world, she aims to stand on the podium in climatic conditions that could serve her.

How do you feel before approaching your first Games?

Céline Boutier:

I'm doing really well.

I'm super happy to be here and can't wait to start the tournament.

I was able to experience the course for myself, having had a glimpse of it having been able to attend part of the boys' final lap last Sunday.

To play it, it was inevitably a different feeling, especially at the level of the density of the grass which differs from what one finds in Europe and the United States.

It was cool to be able to play on it.

To discover

  • The full Olympic program

  • The Olympic medal table

Were you able to discuss with the boys their impression of the course?

Do you feel you have enough information about it?

Obviously I would have liked to be able to follow them even more and know more about them, but I had some interesting information.

Afterwards, it's still better to play it yourself, especially since the men have a different reach and different clubs on the greens attacks.

So on some points, they can't really advise me.

But it was already a good preview to see them, and it was really motivating to see them evolve and to be on the podium.

It makes me want to win a medal even more.

The climatic conditions, particularly in terms of heat, are proving to be trying. How did you feel when you discovered the route? Is this something you dread?

I felt pretty good. I have the feeling that with each passing day, my body is acclimating better and besides, I have the impression that the climatic conditions here are quite similar to those in Dallas, where I live. There is quite a bit of humidity and heat. So these are conditions that I know well. Hope this will go for the tournament.

How does it feel to represent France for your first Games? In golf, it is very rare to represent your country as is the case here…

It is quite indescribable. Personally, since I turned professional, I dreamed of competing in the Games. I know that's not the case with all golfers, who don't always have that Olympic vibe, but I don't (smile). And it is true that it is an opportunity that rarely presents itself for a golfer to truly represent his country, and not Europe as in the Solheim Cup. I take that as real pride.
