Seven medals, including two gold ones - the eleventh day of the Summer Games in Tokyo brought the German Olympians even more medals than the previous day, which was already so successful. Long jump world champion
Malaika Mihambo
secured gold in her last attempt after a difficult year for her, the
German
women's
track cycling four
also became Olympic champion - in a world record time. The Norwegian
Karsten Warholm
also ran
the 400 meters. And gymnastics superstar
Simone Biles
won bronze on the balance beam on her comeback.
From a German point of view, the day with its precious metals was completed by the sailors,
Sebastian Brendel and Tim Hecker
in a two-man canoe and
Lukas Dauser
on the parallel bars.
In the last leap from bronze to gold
Malaika Mihambo
is Olympic long jump champion for the first time.
Germany's athlete in 2019 and 2020 had been in third place with 6.95 meters before the sixth and last attempt, Brittney Reese from the USA and the Nigerians Ese Brume jumped two centimeters further.
With her final jump, the 27-year-old German landed at exactly seven meters - and the gold medal.
"I knew all along that I could do it," said Mihambo after the competition.
After a year full of problems at the start-up, not all experts had counted on them.
Three world records and the Olympic victory
The German four-man
track bike
around
Mieke Kröger
has secured gold with a power demonstration station.
In 4: 04.242 minutes, the four women improved their world record, which had only been set in Tokyo, a second time and left Great Britain no chance in the final.
The quartet ensured the first German Olympic triumph in the women's endurance track since Petra Rossner in 1992 in Barcelona.
“Oh my god, in what a time!
I never would have thought that this was in the girls at all.
Probably neither did you a few months ago, "said the two-time Olympic champion Kristina Vogel on ZDF:" It is fantastic what a performance you have achieved.
This is unbeliveable."
Biles returns and wins bronze
Actually,
Simone Biles
wanted to
win gold six times in Tokyo.
But to protect her mental health, she skipped most of the competitions.
After winning silver with the team, the 1.42-meter-tall American only started on the balance beam in the individual competition - and won bronze in what may be her last Olympic competition.
"I wasn't expecting a medal today," Biles said.
And that she received a lot of encouragement, but also hostility in social networks, for her canceled starts.
"I'll try to deal with it all," said the American in response to questions about a possible end of career.
Then we'll see.
Fable world record for Warholm
It
was almost a given
that
Karsten Warholm
would win gold over the 400 meter hurdles.
But the new world record of 45.94 seconds surprised even the Norwegian.
"That's crazy," said the 25-year-old after the race.
Warholm had already broken the previous decade-old world record at the Diamond League meeting in Oslo on July 1st.
In his home game at Bislett Stadium, he won in 46.70 seconds, only he was almost seven tenths faster.
Three times two medals for Germany in sailing
Erik Heil
and
Thomas Plößel took
bronze in the 49er
at the sailing competitions
, as did
Paul Kohlhoff
and
Alica Stuhlemmer
in the Nacra 17 class.
The sailing story of the day from a German perspective is that of
Tina Lutz
and
Susann Beucke
, who won Olympic silver in the 49er FX class.
And not because the two were placed one place better than the other German medalists.
For Lutz and Beucke, who have been sailing together for 14 years, the medal is the career highlight after many low blows, including a legal dispute with their own association.
Short and sweet
In the canoeing category, "Mr Canadier"
Sebastian Brendel
missed the fourth Olympic victory of his career
in a pair with
Tim Hecker
over 1000 meters, but won bronze.
The boats from Cuba and China landed before the Germans.
Lukas Dauser
gave the German Gymnastics Federation a medal on the last day of the competition, the 28-year-old won silver on bars.
"I still can't believe it," said Dauser on ZDF: "It's a bit like in a movie." In doing so, he prevented the first medalless games for the DTB since Sydney 21 years ago.
Germany's hockey and handball
players lost on the eleventh day of the competition.
While the hockey team is now at least playing for bronze after the 1: 3 against Australia against India, the handball players of coach Alfred Gíslason failed in the quarter-finals after a poor performance 26:31 at Egypt and go home without a medal.
Armand Duplantis
just missed his own world record in the pole vault, but can comfort himself with the gold medal.
The Swede was the only athlete to overcome the 6.02 meters - like all heights before in the first attempt.
He finally failed three times at the world record height of 6.19 meters.
In the first attempt, he tore the bar in the downward movement very thinly with his chest.
The German beach volleyball players
Laura Ludwig
and
Margareta Kozuch
were eliminated in the quarter-finals.
Against April Ross and Alix Klineman from the USA they lost two close sets 19:21 each.
The two do not yet know whether it was the end for the duo.
“We'll sit down and see how we go on at all.
How much rest we need, how much enthusiasm or motivation we still have, «says Ludwig.
Germany basketball players
were also eliminated in the quarterfinals.
Against Slovenia around superstar Luka Dončić, the DBB team had no chance at 70:94 (37:44).
A victory would have meant the first Olympic semi-final for the German basket hunters.
