Andre De Grasse, Olympic champion in the 200m: "No one will ever be able to take it away from me"

2021-08-04T16:04:33.206Z

"I'm very proud of myself," assured the Canadian sprinter, very moved, after winning the gold medal in the 200m on Wednesday in Tokyo.

What feeling do you have after this title?

Andre De Grasse:

After all this work, these efforts, I have done it, I am very proud of myself.

I knew it would be very quick.

My coach told me to be good in the turn, to try to stay in contact, that if I wasn't I couldn't win the race.

That's what I managed to do, then stay relaxed and in a good position to finish strong.

After the race my heart was beating at full speed, it's the first time in my life at this point, I thought I would die for a second, I was on the ground my god, for my 6th race in 5 days, I was trying just to breathe (...) Everyone said that the Americans were going to win, but it was my moment, I knew I had it in me.

I often took silver, bronze, but I was young in 2016 and I was racing against Usain Bolt ...

You kept your emotions at first ...

I was trying to keep my

emotions inside

me, after everything I've been through, then my shell chipped a little (smile).

Then see Nia (Ali, his partner), my children on the screen, I did it for them (he breaks down in tears) ... I'm very proud of myself, it was a beautiful moment to to see.

I did it for them, my family, my children.

Of course I was very moved for the birth of my children, but this is the first time that I have been so moved on the track.

This gold medal, no one will ever be able to take it away from me.

How badly have you been affected by your injuries?

2017 was a difficult year for me, I was in London to watch the Worlds (injured), I knew I could have won a title there. Then I came back in 2018 and got injured in the same place, I was devastated, I had an extra year of care. Fortunately the Doha Worlds were in October (2019).
