The high jumper from Dorfen talks about seventh place in the German U18 championship in Rostock

Jana, you took part in the German championships for the first time.

How did you experience this premiere?

That was an absolutely cool experience.

The German championships are something you like to go to - even if they take place as far away as in Rostock.

Unfortunately, the qualification never worked out in the past few years.

I jumped the height in the hall that would have been necessary, but that didn't count for the open-air DM.

Most recently you jumped over 1.73 meters at the Bavarian championships.

How did it go in Rostock?

The entry height was 1.60 meters, which is already high.

I usually always start at 1.55 meters.

But the level at a DM is just higher.

At 1.68 meters, I broke the bar on the first attempt.

Accordingly, I was nervous on the second attempt, but luckily I managed it quite well.

Your two teammates from the Bayern squad, Lara Mößthaler and Luisa Kammerl, have already left at this height.

Yes, unfortunately.

The field of participants has thinned out quickly.

Of the 18 athletes at the beginning, there were only ten who competed over 1.71 meters.

You jumped this height straight away, despite heavy rain and cross winds.

But it was over at 1.74.

Were you very sad

No not at all.

The bar just fell at 1.74 meters.

Of course I would have been happy if I had set a new personal best.

But I still achieved my goal.

What was your destination when you went to Rostock?

I was registered as the tenth strongest participant.

My goal was to get out of the competition with a better placement - and I managed to do that with seventh place.

What was the biggest challenge for you in this competition?

When I looked at the starting field, I knew that the competition was really tough.

Johanna Göring from Baden-Württemberg started as the absolute favorite with a reporting value of 1.92 meters.

I met her in a competition in May, she's an exceptional athlete.

But the biggest challenge wasn't the other participants.

For me the competition was mentally very demanding.

What exactly do you mean by that?

The field of participants was very large with 18 athletes.

As a result, the waiting time between the jumps was long.

I had to wait about ten minutes.

Usually after a jump I go to the trainer, get tips and then jump again shortly afterwards.

It is exhausting to maintain concentration for ten minutes, this state between tension and relaxation.

Because then you have to call up your performance to the point.

How important is it for your performance that you get feedback during the competition?

This is very important.

I was happy that Sebastian Kneifel was there in Rostock.

As a young trainer for the high jump in the German Athletics Association, he has such a trained eye and immediately recognizes little things that I have to correct.

And that also leads to better results.

Sebastian also regularly exchanges ideas with my trainer Franz Wandinger from Dorfen.

Both prepared me optimally for the German championship.

Do you have a lucky charm to accompany you to your competitions?

No.

But I have a playlist that I always listen to when I warm up.

I already know the songs by heart - some of the lyrics really push me and really get me in the competitive mood.

For example?

The music of Kontra K. I came across the Berlin rapper through a three-jumper on Instagram.

What do you take with you from the DM in Rostock?

Lots of suggestions.

I find it very inspiring to watch other high jumpers.

How they start up and then convert their jump in height is totally exciting.

Not every jumper jumps the same.

And you can learn a lot, especially in a competition at this level - I might try one or the other in training.

Will you continue with your training right away?

No, now it's time to go on vacation.

But that doesn't mean that I won't do sports for four weeks.

My family is very sporty, I will certainly be climbing, hiking and mountain biking.

But I'm taking a break from typical athletics.

This break is important to recover - after that I start again.

Your goal for 2022?

I've tasted blood: Of course, another DM participation would be great.

But the most important thing is that I still enjoy jumping up.

Because for me this sport is a great balance to school.

The interview was conducted by Beate Spindler.
