The records tumble on the running tracks in Tokyo: Similar to the day before, when the Norwegian Karsten Warholm set a fabulous world record over the 400 meter hurdles, the Olympic Stadium had a historically fast final race to offer.
Later in the day there are the wrestling medal fights - and even more running decisions for the sprinters and the middle distance.
That was important
Gold favorite
Johannes Vetter
qualified for the
javelin
final
on Saturday, but made it more exciting than expected. The world's best of the year, who throws more than 90 meters on good days, failed with the first two attempts at the required qualifying distance of 83.50 meters. Only in the third and last litter did Vetter reach a solid 85.64 meters. Julian Weber is also qualified, Bernhard Seifert did not reach the final.
The final of the women over
400 meter hurdles
was in no way inferior to the sensational race of the men from the previous day: The American
Sydney McLaughlin
improved her own world record by 44 hundredths to 51.46 seconds.
Behind the new Olympic champion, compatriot Dalilah Muhammad stayed on the silver rank, also below the old world record, while the Dutch woman Femke Bol came in third.
Skateboarder
Lilly Stoephasius
, Germany's youngest Olympian at the age of 14, just missed the final in the park discipline.
38.37 points were enough for Stoephasius for a good ninth place, the best eight qualified for the final round.
The victory went to Japan's skateboard star Sakura Yosozumi.
As
expected, the
German
table tennis
women lost to China in the semi-finals of the team competition. Xiaona Shan, Petrissa Solja and Han Ying stayed on the plate without a chance against the leading table tennis nation and lost 0: 3. On Thursday (4 a.m.) the game for third place against Hong Kong is about bronze.
In the all-around competitions, the German medal hopes got off to a solid start: In
the men's
decathlon
, world champion
Niklas Kaul
is only 17th after a 100-meter run, long jump and shot put, but he showed achievements in the area of his personal possibilities.
Kaul's strongest disciplines follow on the second day of the competition, with fellow favorite Damian Warner from Canada.
In the
heptathlon
, the former vice world champion Carolin Schäfer is in tenth place after the first two disciplines, hurdles and high jump.
It is led by the Belgian Olympic champion from Rio, Nafissatou Thiam.
