The rescue was still possible: The tennis men of the TC Penzberg would have needed a victory from the remaining two duels in the “Super District League”.

In the end it turned out in a way that nobody had wished for.

Penzberg - Nobody had planned that the season would end like this.

And even if it had, it would have been a damn miserable plan: The tennis men of the TC Penzberg played their last two games on a single weekend, which in itself is not problematic, had it not been for this ugly constellation, this unnecessary pressure: for that To get rid of the tiresome subject of "relegation" more or less, they should have won a game.

“We still need a win,” said Sebastian Zeller, at some point in the middle of the individual games in the catch-up duel against Eichenau.

At this point in time he could not have suspected that Penzberg would have lost the duel after the singles (1: 5).

In the end it was 3: 6, the next day even 1: 8 against the strong reserve of TC Blutenburg Munich, after all third in the super district league.

What this all meant did not become apparent until a week later.

Since the ESV München Sportpark played its last game against the bottom of the table Herrsching - and, as expected, won 5: 4.

The chances of the Penzbergers were, to be honest, not particularly high from the start, so the penultimate place and the associated relegation to the district league are not really surprising.

After this bitter end, one will think back to Sebastian Zeller's words and murmur: he was right.

The 4-5 defeat against ESV "was our first relegation game", he says, which they "lost unluckily".

Such a short season as the tennis teams contest in June and July is often reduced to such short moments.

That may not always be fair, but it is highly entertaining.

TC Penzberg has to be relegated from the "Super District League"

That’s how it was in 2021, the first in the super district league that really counts. Last season there had been no relegation. The newcomers from Penzberg had the opportunity to test themselves and the class for a year - without any impact. Although that didn't work out so well either. Two teams withdrew, a duel against Herrsching was postponed due to a corona case, no alternative date was found and ultimately it was not. The men from the TCP, however, have taken away that they can hold their own at this level. "Not at the top, but the level," says Sebastian Zeller, the deputy team leader. The super district league, as the scene likes to say, is the gateway to great tennis. “It starts with bought players,” says Zeller. Pfaffenhofen, for example, the newly minted master,Markus May performed in first place, performance class 1, it doesn't get any better than that. In the top positions practically every club has experts in performance classes 1 to 3. The TCP, on the other hand, impresses with its breadth. “Everyone is pretty much the same,” says Sebastian Zeller.

It's not a pleasant thing for someone like him, LK6, because he regularly has to challenge the heavyweights. Six months without winter training didn't improve the situation either, as he smugly notes. "I'm playing too far ahead," says Zeller. It's the same with his colleagues Lars Veldheer, David Vesely and Peter Baumeister. All have a negative individual balance. But Penzberg trumps with his talents at the back. Maxi Ontiveros (4: 2 wins) and Jonas Waldmann (5: 2) - both born in 2006 - surprise many a seasoned opponent, and even their own people during training. "We were able to keep up until last year, and it's still tight now," jokes Sebastian Zeller.

They know that the boys will move on at some point because they are improving so rapidly. It's always fun against the youngsters, “because you see certain parallels. You used to be young. ”Sebastian Zeller, born in Hesse, played with the men himself when he was 15 or 16 years old. After studying in Freising, his girlfriend, now his wife, led him to Penzberg. There he now plays with the TCP veterans Peter Baumeister and Christian Deger, who form the core of the team. They have already experienced many adventures together, such as the duel with Herrsching, which culminated in the protests of the opponents. A Herrschinger left during the rain break. The sun returned unexpectedly - only the guest player no longer. His colleagues didn't compete because they didn't think it was fair to keep playing. The game management ultimately decided in favor of Penzberg. "That was unpleasant, we would have liked to have clarified that from a sporting point of view," emphasizes Sebastian Zeller. Ultimately, however, this victory was worthless, the Penzbergers have to start the bitter journey into the district league together with Herrsching.
