Egyptian Gianna Farouk gifted the bronze medal to her country during yesterday's competitions in karate in the 61kg weight category, within the framework of the Olympic Games in Tokyo.
The fourteenth day of the Tokyo Olympics resulted in only an Arab bronze medal, which was crowned by Gianna Farouk, after she tied with Chinese champion Yin Xiaoyan 1-1 in the semi-finals, and the Chinese benefited from the judges' decision to beat the Egyptian star.
Gianna Farouk, 26, became the first Egyptian, Arab and African player to win an Olympic medal in karate, and announced her retirement after this historic achievement.
The Arab countries have so far won thirteen different medals for Qatar, two gold medals in weightlifting through Faris Ibrahim and in the high jump for Moataz Issa Barshim, Tunisia gold for swimmer Ahmed Hefnawy, silver for taekwondo player Ahmed El Jendoubi, Morocco gold for runner Sufian El Bakkali in the 3000-meter steeplechase, Jordan silver for taekwondo player Saleh Al Sharbati and bronze for Karate Abdul Rahman Al-Masatafa and Egypt four bronze medals in taekwondo for Hedaya Malak and Saif Issa, in wrestling for Muhammad Ibrahim Al-Sayed, in karate for Gianna Farouk, Kuwait a bronze in shooting for Abdullah Al-Rashidi, and finally, in Syria, bronze for Maan Asaad.
