Egyptian female athlete Faryal Ashraf won the gold medal today in the karate competition in the over 61 kilograms weight category at the Summer Olympics held in the Japanese capital, Tokyo.
In the final, Ashraf defeated Azerbaijan's Riana Zaretska 2-0.
Feryal Ashraf qualified for the final after beating Kazakhstan's Sofia Peroltsvia 5-4 in the semi-finals.
The medal that Ashraf won today is the first gold medal for Egypt in the Tokyo Olympics and the first gold medal in karate in Africa and Egypt, because this is the first time that karate has been included in the Olympics, and it is the first women's medal in the history of Egypt in the Olympics.
