Tokyo Olympics: in the Korda family, ask for Nelly, Olympic golf champion!

2021-08-07T09:00:46.218Z

At the end of the suspense, the American Nelly Korda (23) won the Olympic golf event on Saturday at the Kasumigaseki Count course.

She is not (yet) the best known of the Korda, yet it was Nelly who brought home her 33rd gold medal in the United States on Saturday at the end of the golf tournament.

In the lead for a large part of the event, the American was nevertheless scared to the end, letting the Japanese Mone Imani return to her height in the fourth and last round, on the course of the Kasumigaseki Country Club of Kawagoe.

Upon arrival, Nelly Korda was finally adorned with gold for her first at the Games.

🏌 After a fourth round of pure madness, the 🇺🇸 Nelly Korda is crowned Olympic golf champion at 17 sous par!

Anything but a surprise for the one who grabbed the top spot in the world just a few weeks ago, after winning the Women's PGA Championship.

But in his shadow, hides another Korda, his sister Jessica, world number 13 before the Olympics, and also present in Tokyo to play the golf tournament.

At 28, she finished in 15th place, far behind her junior.

Golf ... and tennis

In the Korda family, women perform with a club and a small white ball, the men more with a racket and a yellow ball. Because before the new generation led by the Olympic champion, Petr, the father, had already marked the history of tennis. A true star of the courts in the 1990s, the Czechoslovakian rose to second in the world (in 1998) and won the Australian Open, in singles (1998) and in doubles (1996). The only downside was that Korda's name was associated with doping at this time, after Petr tested positive at Wimbledon in 1998.

Twenty years later, it's Sebastian, now 21, to enter the ATP Tour.

Unlike his sisters, he declined the invitation to the Games, to focus on American tournaments, including the ATP 500 in Washington which is currently taking place.

Currently 45th player in the world, his best career ranking, Sebastian Korda is part of the famous NextGen, called to renew the circuit in some time.

And for the family portrait to be complete, the mother, Regina Kordová, could not practice any other profession than a high level athlete. Less well known than the father of her children in her time, Kordová played on the WTA Tour between 1980 and 1992, securing a doubles title at Estoril (1989) and ranking, at her best, 26th in the world in singles (1991 ). In summary, the Korda family has been talking about them for over 30 years, and it's not going to stop.
