In comparison, the French delegation had brought back 41 medals from Rio in 2016, which ranked France in 7th place in the table at the time.
In Tokyo, and as often in history, judo represented the greatest source of blue-white-red (8) distinctions, ahead of fencing (5), handball (2) and rowing (2) .
Each of the awarded athletes will receive a bonus from the state, equivalent to € 65,000 for gold medalists, 25,000 for silver and 15,000 for bronze.

United States ahead of China and Japan
Much higher in the final table, the fight for first place raged until the last moment between the United States (113 medals) and China (88), with the Americans getting one more title (39) than the Chinese (38). Japan, the host country, took third place (58) with 27 gold medals, more than double the titles obtained at the Rio Olympics. Bodes well for the French delegation which will host the next Olympiad, in three years, in Paris.
