The Monegasque club got their ticket to the Champions League play-off against Shakhtar Donetsk next week, after

Mission accomplished !

A week after the first leg where AS Monaco won 2-0 at Sparta Prague in the third qualifying round of the Champions League, the Monegasques were serious to win 3-1 at home .

It will be much more complicated next week against Shakhtar Donetsk in the decisive jump-off.

What you must remember

The opening of the scoring was long overdue. In the first part of the match, despite a mastery of the game, the Monegasques multiplied individual errors and lacked depth against a Czech defensive block difficult to pierce. Even though some great opportunities arose on the initiative of Volland or Caio Henrique, they were all stopped by the 34-year-old Romanian goalkeeper Florin Nita.

The latter was trapped in a second more eventful period.

In the 50th minute, Gelson Martins opened the scoring for Monaco, well served by Volland.

It will take six short minutes for Golovine, launched to perfection by Ben Yedder, imitates him and sends the ball into the net.

At 78th, Moberg-Karlsson reduced the score on a Monegasque defensive error, before midfielder Sofiane Diop scored his first goal of the season.

The player: Gelson Martins

Already a scorer on Friday in the league against Nantes, Gelson Martins was certainly the driving force behind the Monegasques by scoring the first goal on Tuesday evening.

The Portuguese player first feigned the cross, then kicked with a big right foot, in a very tight angle, so that Nita could not do anything.

Martins made up for it in the first leg a week ago.

The number: 13

This is the number of professional Brazilian players in the Ukrainian club Shakhtar Donetsk, the next opponent of AS Monaco. A heavy armada under the wing of the new coach Roberto De Zerbi, very ambitious Italian coach, ex-Sassuolo. Le Chakhtior remains on four qualifying ranks for the group stage of the Champions League (2017-2021). Niko Kovac's men will have to ramp up for the double confrontation on August 17 or 18 (first leg) and August 25 or 26 (return).
