The European Super Cup was held tonight (Wednesday) when European champions Chelsea play against Europa League holder Villarreal at Windsor Park in Belfast, in a game that actually opens the 2021/22 season in Europe.
For Villarreal it is their third consecutive encounter against an English team in Europe after beating Arsenal in the Europa League semi-finals and Manchester United in the final at the end of a penalty shootout.
This is Chelsea's fifth appearance in the European Super Cup: it beat Real Madrid in 1998 in Monaco and has since lost three times, in 2012 to Atletico Madrid, in 2013 to Bayern Munich and in 2019 to Liverpool.
For the yellow submarine this is his first appearance in the European Supercup.
