The Dutch Mercedes driver Nyck de Vries was crowned Formula E world champion in Berlin.

At the season finale of the fully electric racing series, eighth place was enough for the 26-year-old to keep the competition at a distance.

The Frenchman Norman Nato celebrated his first victory on the grounds of the former Tempelhof Airport.

In a chaotic race, the Briton Oliver Rowland came in second ahead of the Belgian Stoffel Vandoorne.

De Vries showed a less than confident performance in the final phase with a few driving errors and tough maneuvers.

However, he also benefited from the early retirement of several title candidates.

The Swiss Edoardo Mortara overlooked the New Zealander Mitch Evans at the start and crashed into his Jaguar without braking.

Both retired after the accident and had no chance of winning the first World Championship title in Formula E.

In its seventh season, the electric racing series was officially held as a world championship for the first time.

De Vries (99 points) was ahead of Mortara (92) in the overall standings.

The best German was Pascal Wehrlein (Porsche) in eleventh.

Although Mercedes also won the team championship, the team's departure from the series seems to have already been decided.

After Audi and BMW say goodbye to Formula E after this season, the Silver Arrows will follow after the coming 2022 season, according to consistent media reports.

Accordingly, the end of the third German automobile manufacturer could be officially announced next week.

Mercedes had only been there with its own team since the 2019/2020 season.
