When Gerd Müller finally ended his career in 1983, "Servus Gerd" was on the scoreboard at the Munich Olympic Stadium.

At the age of 75, Müller has now died, as his long-term club announced.

Of course, he scored the 2-1 winner.

Who else?

It was his 68th and last goal in the national dress, in just 62 games.

Then he ended his international career.

His international star rose at the 1970 World Cup.

In the group stage he scored late in the win against Morocco, the goalkeepers Bulgaries and Peru suffered three Müller goals each.

The victorious quarter-final against England decided - of course - Müller, in the game of the century against Italy he scored twice.

As so often, he was the top scorer.

Müller celebrated the great successes in the national team and club at the side of Uli Hoeneß.

It was also Hoeneß who brought him back from the USA after his life there got into trouble.

The rise of FC Bayern would have been unthinkable without Müller.

In 1965, the Munich team entered the Bundesliga stage together with their long-time rival from Mönchengladbach.

The jerseys were still different, the game was played in the stadium on Grünwalder Straße, but one thing should remain the same for the next 13 years: Müller scored and scored and scored.

He scored a total of 365 goals for Munich in 427 Bundesliga games.

Müller won four European Cups with FC Bayern: In 1967 the Munich team won the Cup Winner's Cup, 1974 to 1976 in the National Champion's Cup.

Müller competed 60 times in both competitions - and scored 54 goals.

The attacker, who is said to have scored 180 goals in one season for TSV Nördlingen as an A-youth, won four championships with Bayern in the Bundesliga.

He himself was seven times the record shooter in a season - that is also a record.

After a falling out with Bayern coach Pál Csernai, Müller left Bayern for the USA at the end of the 1970s.

While Franz Beckenbauer (r.) Found his luck at Cosmos New York, Gerd Müller's life at the Fort Lauderdale Strikers fell apart.

Beckenbauer and Hoeneß brought him back to Munich.

After a rehab, Müller (here with ex-1860 keeper Radenkovic) worked for more than ten years as an assistant coach for the Bayern amateurs.

In 2014 his illness forced him to withdraw.

The greatest goalscorer in German football died on August 15, 2021.
