Roger Federer on crutches instead of on the court - this is the perspective of the tennis superstar. He is about to have a third knee operation. But that shouldn't be the end of the 40-year-old's career.

Tennis star Roger Federer has to undergo surgery on his right knee for the third time and is unlikely to return to the ATP tour this year.

"I'll need crutches for many weeks and I'll be out for many months," said the Swiss in an Instagram video a week after his 40th birthday.

The 20-time Grand Slam champion recently canceled his participation in the ATP Masters in Toronto and Cincinnati, and the start at the US Open (from August 30) was in the stars.

It is now clear that Federer will not be there.

“I would like to give you an update on what has happened since Wimbledon,” said Federer on Sunday, “I have done a lot of medical checks, including my knee.

They told me I needed an operation.

I will do it."

Federer, who had already waived the Olympic Games in Tokyo because of the problems, wants to fight.

The end of a career is still not an issue.

“I hope to return on the tour.

But I'm realistic, "says Federer," I know how difficult it is at this age to undergo another operation. "

The intervention is "the right thing, because I want to be healthy, because I want to be able to run around later." Federer had withdrawn from the French Open in June after reaching the round of 16 in order to spare himself for Wimbledon.

At the prestigious tournament in London he then failed in the quarterfinals.
