In recent days former Afghanistan national team captain Khalida Popal has begged for her life and in addressing the heads of world football she called for "life-saving help" when she feared for the fate of female footballers in the country.
Since the takeover of the Taliban many footballers have been hiding in their homes.
"I could not sleep, I cry and feel helpless," said Popal, who was the first captain on the experimental team Afghanistan set up in 2007 for women.
However, now the Taliban is demanding the return of 20-year-old rules that women are not allowed to study, are not allowed to leave the home without a male relative, are not allowed to work and are required to cover their entire body and scalp hair.
Many women have already suffered violence and severe punishment in recent days.
