Nördlingen - Last Sunday, soccer idol Gerd Müller died at the age of only 75.

On Friday, Nördlingen commemorated Gerd Müller in a public commemoration ceremony.

"A really big one left - a sporting idol of a whole generation and inspiration for countless young footballers who are still emulating him today," said Mayor David Wittner (Free Voters) on Friday during the hour of mourning for the former Bayern Munich goalscorer.

"The city of Nördlingen has lost a great son."

In front of the Klösterle city hall, there was a list of condolences on which the more than 100 mourners could sign.

On a candle in the room, Müller was depicted as a young man with a crown and a stately coat.

Underneath it was written: "The eternal king of football".

Müller has always "remained human", explained Wittner to the guests in the city hall and emphasized its down-to-earth attitude.


Gerd Müller * was born in Nördlingen in 1945.

In 1964, at the age of 18, he moved from the Swabian amateur league club TSV 1861 Nördlingen to FC Bayern and shaped an era.

Müller is the most successful goalscorer in the Bundesliga with 365 goals in 427 games.

The former international had died on Sunday at the age of 75.

FC Bayern and its fans will honor their big scorer at the Bundesliga home game against 1. FC Köln with a special commemoration.

Before the soccer game kicks off this Sunday (5.30 p.m.), President Herbert Hainer and Honorary President Uli Hoeneß will pay tribute to Müller with speeches on the lawn.

For the first time in a year and a half, up to 20,000 spectators are allowed in the Allianz Arena for the game against Cologne.
