The incidents which led to the interruption of the Ligue 1 match Nice-Marseille on Sunday evening are "an insult to football".

Sports Minister Roxana Maracineanu spoke publicly on Monday at noon to denounce the crossing of “a red line” and to demand “sanctions” for the “culprits”.

The match of the 3rd day Nice-Marseille was stopped Sunday an hour and a half after the derby turned into a fist.

Supporters invaded the pitch following an incident that ignited the match: yet another plastic bottle thrown at Marseille player Dimitri Payet, whom the latter returned with rage to the stand.

Nice were leading 1-0 when the game was interrupted in the 75th minute.

On Monday, an investigation was opened by the Nice prosecutor's office and the two clubs were summoned to the disciplinary committee of the Professional Football League (LFP).

"This is obviously regrettable given the time we spent following matches without spectators, without sports lovers, without encouragement", first reacted the Minister on BFMTV.

“Seeing that from the first football matches, it hurts, it's intolerable because the first of the conditions for a match to take place is obviously to ensure the safety of the people who are on the field, players, referees, coaches, ”she continued, referring to the throwing of projectiles that had already marked the Montpellier-Marseille match two weeks ago at La Mosson.

"These incidents are an insult first of all for football, for sport in general and the supporters themselves", she added, asking to "sanction" the authors of the throwing of projectiles and those who invaded the lawn, "as it should be".

“There are the sanctions, the stadium bans.

I am ready to reopen this file if necessary, if however we manage to designate the culprits in question, ”she said, reserving the right to lodge a complaint.

"I think there must be penalties for the club in question," also said Roxana Maracineanu.

Should the match have resumed?

She leans in the affirmative, but waits to know more to decide.

“This is going to be one of the elements of the investigation.

If the players felt in danger (…) they did well to stay in the locker room and ensure that the match does not resume, ”replied the Minister.

On Franceinfo, the former swimming champion also called on the Nice supporters perpetrators of these inadmissible acts to stay at home. “It's sport, we are not in an arena. We are there to have a sports show, if people are not able to follow it they can do it in front of their TV and throw bottles in front of their TV but not in a stadium ”.
