The Emperor of Japan Naruhito officially declared the Tokyo Paralympic Games open on Tuesday during the opening ceremony at the National Stadium, 16 days after the close of the Olympics and one year after their initial date.
"I declare open the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games", declared the Emperor Naruhito behind his white mask in the official stand of the stadium, deprived of spectators due to the generalized camera decreed in the face of the fifth wave of Covid-19 hitting the Japan.

In total, nearly 4,400 participants from 160 delegations will be in the running until September 5 to win one of the 539 medals at stake. As for the France team, the declared objective is to win around thirty medals.
Led by Stéphane Houdet (wheelchair tennis) and Sandrine Martinet (para-judo), the French delegation, made up of 138 Paralympic athletes, paraded all smiles inside the Tokyo National Stadium.
