Mario Götze and coach Roger Schmidt missed their return to the Champions League with PSV Eindhoven.
Despite about an hour outnumbered, the Dutch did not make it past 0-0 in the playoff second leg against Benfica Lisbon.
The first leg in Portugal was won by record champions Benfica 2-1.
In a duel between two former Bundesliga coaches, David Wagner prevailed against Young Boys Bern at Peter Stögers Ferencvaros Budapest.
After the 3-2 win in the first leg, the Swiss won 3-2 (1-2) in Hungary's capital and reached the group stage again after two unsuccessful attempts.
In Eindhoven, Benfica's Brazilian Lucas Verissimo saw yellow-red in the 32nd minute.
PSV, where Philipp Max was also in the starting line-up alongside Götze, tried in vain to score the goal they needed for their first group stage participation since 2018/2019 against the Portuguese.
The former Cologne and Dortmund coach Stöger led Ferencvaros 2-1 after 27 minutes, which would have been enough for the second entry into the group stage in a row.
Christian Fassnacht (56th minute) and Felix Mambimbi (90th + 3) then turned the game for the guests around the former Schalke coach Wagner.
Malmö FF will also play in the premier class.
After the 2-0 in the first leg, the Swedish champions could even afford a 1: 2 (1: 1) defeat at the Bulgarian champion Ludogorez Rasgrad.
The last three playoff second legs will take place on Wednesday evening, and the group stage will be drawn from 6 p.m. on Thursday.
