Michael Schumacher was born on this day in Hürth, North Rhine-Westphalia.

In the following decades he developed into the most successful Formula 1 driver of all time, racing from record to record and making sports history.

A skiing accident shocked fans all over the world in 2013.

Since then, Schumacher has had health problems and is shielded from the public.

Despite wearing a helmet, he had suffered a traumatic brain injury in a fall and was in mortal danger for days.
