Fantastic opening for the Israeli delegation to the Paralympic Games in Tokyo: Swimmer Iyad Shelby today (Wednesday) picked up a gold medal in the men's 100m backstroke final, and climbed to the top of the podium.
Shelby, who competes in the disability category S1 (the most difficult), was only 25 hundredths ahead of the Ukrainian Anton Cole, with whom he ran a close competition until he touched the wall.
Shalabi, a Muslim resident of Shefar'am and deaf and dumb by birth, was left paralyzed following an accident when he was 13. Today he will close an exciting circle as he stands on the podium while "Hatikva" is played in Tokyo for the third time in recent weeks.
