Maccabi Tel Aviv's search for a foreign player continues.

A week before the registration of players for the home stage of the Conference League comes to an end, assuming that the trophy holder will indeed pass Shakhtur Kargandi tomorrow and secure her place among the 32 participants in the factory (Thursday, 20:30 in Sport1), Spain announced this morning (Wednesday) that the team tried to attach X Athletic Bilbao, 31-year-old Ibai Gomes.

The article was published in "S", according to which Gomes has rejected a number of offers recently, the most important of which are from Maccabi Tel Aviv, as well as teams from Turkey and Greece as well as from other "exotic countries".

It was also written that Gomes refused offers overseas because he hoped to stay in Spain, when Elche expressed interest, but at this stage did not officially contact.

Sporting Chihun was also mentioned as an option for him.

It is very possible that Enrique Sborit, a defender of the Yellows for the past three years who has known him well from their time together at Athletic Bilbao, also took an active part in Maccabi Tel Aviv's persuasion efforts.

Gomes joined Athletic in 2011 and played in its ranks for five years, until moving to Alavés.

In January 2019 he was bought back by Athletic Bilbao, but recently chose to release his contract which was due to expire next season.

Gomes has 226 appearances in La Liga throughout his career in which he has scored 28 goals and netted 29. However, last season he partnered only 13 times - also due to an injury that sidelined him at the start of the season - and recorded a total of 419 minutes, during which he cooked once.
