July 30, 2021 was the biggest day in the sporting life of trampoline gymnast Zhu Xueying: At the Olympic Games in Tokyo, the Chinese won the title ahead of Liu Lingling (China) and Bryony Page (Great Britain).
The reward: her first Olympic gold medal.
A good three weeks later, the success received small scratches, more precisely her gold medal.
As the 23-year-old wrote on the social media service Weibo, the top layer of her medal has peeled off.
As evidence, she posted three photos that clearly showed damage.
According to the Chinese newspaper "Global Times", the Olympic Organizing Committee reacted to the incident: It is not the gold that is peeling off, but a layer applied to protect the medal.
The company was particularly proud of the production of the awards: 6.21 million used cell phones were collected across Japan for the production of the medals, and for the first time they are made from 100 percent recycled precious metals.
It is not known whether Zhu will receive a new medal.
Two weeks earlier, softball athlete Miu Goto had her gold replaced after the mayor of her hometown bit on the medal without permission.
